The Kingdom Of Strathclyde & Dumbarton Castle

This part of Scotland was once known as the Kingdom of Strathclyde and its capital was Dumbarton, a town just half an hour from here. Dumbarton means ‘Fort of the Britons’ and you can still visit its medieval castle which has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Scotland. It sits proudly upon Dumbarton Rock in the Firth of Clyde and was once the heart of this ancient kingdom.

Rob Roy The Highland Rogue

If it’s following in the footsteps of legends that you prefer, you can explore the land of Rob Roy Macgregor or ‘The Highland Rogue’, as he became known. Rob was a local man who became an outlaw and one of Scotland’s most famous folk heroes, even in his own lifetime. He is known as the Scottish Robin Hood and he has even been played by Liam Neeson in a movie named after him.  There are many local sites relating to him including his gravesite at Balquhidder and The Rob Roy Way, a long-distance footpath from Drymen to Pitlochry that was named in his honour.

William Wallace & Stirling Castle

And the most iconic of all for all Scots’ history lovers, William Wallace. The Scottish knight who became one of the main leaders during the First War of Scottish Independence. Famously played by Mel Gibson in Braveheart, he is a national treasure and Stirlingshire has many sites you can visit to learn more about the man and the legend. There’s the Wallace Monument, a famous landmark that stands above the fields where he led his troops to victory at The Battle of Stirling Bridge, and Stirling Castle, which even today ​​remains a great symbol of Scottish pride. And all that at around an hour’s road trip from your luxury home on the Loch.
